Community Groceries

Millions of families are facing not knowing where the next meal is coming from, so the Community Grocery is here to help.

Step inside a grocery and you’ll find a range of food options fresh from local supermarkets, meaning our members can come and shop for their whole family at the fraction of the cost of a supermarket. Whilst also saving hundreds of tonnes of food being wasted each year.

But it’s not just about the food. In each store you’ll also find a range of free support on offer to members. Support like job clubs, money management support, healthy cooking classes, exploring Christianity courses and much more.

The Community Grocery is being run by the national award-winning charity, The Message Trust in partnership with local churches.  You pay a £5.00 annual fee and can then shop for around £4.00 for a whole family twice weekly.

Good Food Guide

Top tips to make those pennies go further

Cooking on a budget has never been easier thanks to these smart recipes. Make the most of cheap ingredients and save money on student meals, family dishes and more.

Follow these tips when you go shopping to help you spend less:

  1. Make a meal plan, particularly for your main meals.

  2. Write a shopping list and check what food you already have at home to avoid buying things you don’t need.

  3. Select a time to shop in the week when you are not in a rush.

  4. If you can, avoid shopping on an empty stomach as it may affect what and how much you buy. Consider shopping after you have eaten.

  5. Be aware that special offers are not always the cheapest option (See ‘How to read a label’).

  6. Ask a member of staff at your supermarket for fresh food reduction times and try to shop then for reduced priced items. Avoid purchasing more than you need or can store. Use within the specified date or freeze for later.

  7. Value brands often taste just as good for a lower price.

  8. Local food markets offer locally-sourced foods which are usually good value for money.

  9. Cheaper products are not always at eye level or positioned obviously. Check out all the shelves (including top and bottom).

  10. Larger supermarkets offer a better range of produce, often at a cheaper cost, so do your main shop there if you can.

A way to make great food go to a great home

What they do? To make sure good food gets eaten, not wasted. Every day, delicious, fresh food goes to waste at cafes, restaurants, hotels, shops and manufacturers - just because it hasn’t sold in time. The Too Good To Go app lets customers buy and collect Magic Bags of this food - at a great price - directly from businesses.

They work within organisations like local governments and schools to shake up the food system, and change the way we think about throwing away food.

download the app in the appstore (Google or Apple)

Business can also sign up if they are interested in joining.
